Planning for a less impactful kitchen
It’s World Environment Day. What better time to talk about sustainable design ideas for your kitchen remodel? Here are some of our favorites:

- Consider bamboo floors. Bamboo can look a lot like hardwood flooring, but it grows faster and with less water than traditional wood, making it a more sustainable material option.
- Opt for low VOCs. It used to be incredibly difficult to find paints and stains that were low in VOCs. That is no longer the case. You can now get low and even no VOC paints and stains from most major paint companies.
- Energy efficiency is key. Faucets that are low-flow usage, and appliances that are low-energy usage are both great options. Look for WaterSense and Energy Star approved fixtures. Pick lights that are LED. Consider replacing older windows to keep your HVAC air inside, and the outside air outside.
- Plan for longevity. If you design your kitchen with a style that is timeless, the odds of it being torn out and redone by the next homeowner diminish significantly. This ultimately ends up creating less waste, which is always the most sustainable option.
